Princess-Bride-Fairy
Katie is very into dress up right now. She'll go through phases. Last week she dressed up in her Sleeping Beauty costume (courtesy of Dima & Dipa via me at Target sale) and then insisted on putting something over her head "like a bride." She didn't know the word veil. And then she said that she needed to wear wings. I explained that most brides do not wear wings. "I'm a princess bride fairy."
There's part of me that wants to object to her dressing up in these ultra feminine roles. But at the same time, princesses and fairies can be powerful women and I would certainly want to encourage that. And even being a bride does not necessarily reflect a sort of heteronormative dominance since brides can marry each other.
It's just sort of a strange (perhaps cosmic?) coincidence that Katie's renewed interest in dress up happens to coincide with her playing my CD of Free to be You and Me. She asks for it all the time, "I want the pink CD Mommy, the one that was your favorite when you were little." Yes Katie, when you grow up, you can be anything.
