The Special Havdalah
A few weeks ago I went to an inter-faith mom's group at our temple. The topic of discussion was mitzvot and bringing them into your family life. Yes, we're both Jewish, but it was a welcoming group of women and I was interested in the topic. One woman from the group invited me to go the local assisted living residence for havdalah. I told Katie we were going to a "special havdalah" and didn't prepare her for where it was. She saw people lived there and she saw they were kind of like Oma. But she was kind of shy and clingy and I wondered what she was thinking. What I eventually got out of her was that she didn't know that there were old people in Dallas. I tried to explain to her there were old people everywhere. Here was the rest of the conversation
"Katie, are there babies in New York?"
"Yes"
"Are there babies in Dallas?"
"Yes"
"Are there teachers in Dallas?"
"Mommy, there are teachers everywhere."
Anyway, it was a really easy mitzvah, though I'm not sure of the value for the residents other than the fact they love watching little kids. We chatted with 2 women for a little while and it turns out that many of the Jewish residents moved here from the NYC area to be with their children.
