Ice cream party at Claire's

Another event we bought at the preschool auction was an ice cream party at the teacher Claire's house. Claire was the very first teacher we met at preschool, we met her the time we took Katie to visit her new school before we moved. I think she always had a soft spot for Katie because of that and the feeling is mutual. She's a really nice women who calls all the little kids "puppet" with great affection.

I really enjoyed myself with Claire and her husband Julian. They're both from South Africa and Julian mentioned that when he first went to visit Dallas he told Claire that she would love it, "It's just like Johannesburg - very provincial!" True in many ways, but I can only imagine how even more true this was 30 years ago. Dallas actually has a large South African Jewish population (including Shelly and her husband). There are a few reasons for this, including the fact that the climate is similar. But the more I meet transplants, the more I feel like I might -in some shape or form - build a community at some point - I mean all of these other people have, right?
