Miss Independent
Katie has an independent streak, especially when it comes to food. She decided she wanted strawberries. They were on the counter, so she took them off, got her stool and washed them at the sink and put them on a plate (the only plates she can reach are plastic). When she'd gotten a little too close to the green stems, she asked Mommy to cut them off.
Last night I read her "The Family Book" by Todd Parr. It's one of those great books that talks about all sorts of family permutations and combinations - therefore it's one of my favorites. One of the pages says "Some families adopt children." So I explained to her how sometimes babies grow in a mommy's tummy called a birth mother and then another mommy adopts them and they're part of that mommy's family forever. Here's Katie's response.
"Oh, like Meadow grew in another mommy's tummy and now you're her mommy."
Katie is so quick to point out that Meadow is her big sister. We bought Meadow a birthday present at Whole Foods today and she told the cashier, "that's for my dog. She's my big sister. She just turned 7." She told her class yesterday during circle time that "it's my sister's birthday today. You know, my sister Meadow." It think she's feeling a little left out of the peer group because she's the only Sammy Spider without a sibling. No pressuring comments please...
