Trains
Katie was very clear that she wanted trains for Chanukah. Being a good feminist, I was all in favor of this. The hesitation I felt, however, was more the question of does she get everything that she wants when she doesn't need it? Will she still be excited to play with them at her friends' houses? So I told Ann that Katie specifically asked for trains from Nana and she said that was fine. Only a few have arrived so far and Katie couldn't be happier. She's had a busy weekend and the trains have gone with her everywhere. First she took them to Baby Leo's bris. Here's Katie and Kevin playing with the trains at the bris.
Then we took them to see Oma. Here is Katie showing them to Fe, her favorite nurse.
And here are the trains in Oma's dining room.
Then we went out for barbecue with Aunt Rachel on Saturday night. Here are the trains again. The bbq was good, by the way, Daisy May's.
The funny thing is that Katie really treats them with as if they have more human characteristics. Now granted, these are Thomas trains, so they all have names and personalities. But in the car going to Oma's I overheard her saying, "this is the mommy train, this is the daddy train, this is the baby, this is the brother." It was very cute. And she slept with them in her crib the first night until she was playing with them, not sleeping and we took them away. And tonight she put them in a drawer because "the trains are sleeping." Peter's favorite part of the trains is that they come with a brochure that Katie walks around with like a ski map. It's a marketing thing, of course, and true to child nature, Katie already points out the ones she wants.
